Extended definition - Engineering

Engineering is the application of scientific principles to solve problems and develop feasible and viable solutions for the benefit of the human race at large. A person who practises engineering is known as engineer.

An engineer applies the principles of physics and mathematics to solve problems or make improvements. They need to have a thorough knowledge of the basic scientific and logical thinking and also need to update themselves about the latest developments in their chosen field of study.

Engineering is defined as an application of mathematics and physics. Creating mathematical models help engineers to analyse the problems and provide a suitable solution. Usually, many solutions are available and the one which satisfies all the constraints is chosen. Prototypes, simulations, scale-models, destructive and non-destructive testing are common tools to test the product. Testing ensures the functionality of the solution. Safety is also taken into account. With the advent of computers, problem solving has become easier and faster.

The major branches of engineering are aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. With the exponential growth of technology, computer engineering, software engineering, nanotechnology, electronics and mechatronics have also emerged.

In conclusion, scientists study the world as it is, engineers create the world that has never been.

Seeking Permission for practical training

XYZ College of Engineering
Chennai

30 November 2009

The HR Head
MICPL
Chennai

Dear Sir/Madam,

Sub: Application for practical training program

I am a BE CSE final year student who would like to apply for practical training in your reputed organisation. My areas of interests include networks, web designing and C programming. As a dedicated and skilled professional, I am sure to be a valuable addition to your team.

I believe I fulfill the eligibility to receive this training. I am technically qualified in software programming. I have won the best paper award in national level symposium "ZYX" for my application oriented thesis "Balanced Score Card". I also like designing websites as a hobby. As a software company, I am confident that I will be useful and beneficial once I complete the industrial, hands-on training. Also, I am confident that my leadership qualities are upto the scratch. This is strengthened by the fact that I was unanimously selected as Class President this year.

I thank you for spending your invaluable time on my letter. I have enclosed my resume. I look forward to talking to you.

Yours faithfully,
KLM.

Bar graph

This bar graph depicts the amount spent by a typical American in 2006 on entertainment.

Interpretation: $60 is spent on the Internet. Slightly less money is spent on recorded music at $50. $120 is spent on Home videos. Then, $100 is spent on books. Newspapers and magazines are nearly equally spent on, each at $50.

Explanation: The maximum money is spent on Home Video at $120. This embodies the declining trend to visit theatres and enjoy movies at home. Astonishingly, books occupy the second position with $100 spent in a year. This is a heartening trend. A typical American then dips into the pocket for Internet ($60 per year), closely followed by Recorded music ($50 per year). Clearly, technology is the upcoming money-spinner. Lastly, newspapers and magazines cost $50 each respectively. It is a statistic that sadly reminds us the good times before recession that ushered the closure of many American newspaper companies. All in all, entertainment is a major portion of everybody's budget.

Pie Chart

Explanation: This pie chart shows the percentage of languages from which the English words in the modern dictionary. 29% of today's English words have been derived form French. Another 29% of the words have their roots from Latin. The third major chunk is received from Germanic Languages, i.e. Old/Middle English, Old Norse and Dutch at 26%. 4% of the words are derived from proper nouns. Some words are derived from Greek (6%) and the remaining are from other unknown languages( 6%).

Interpretation: The above pie-chart proves beyond doubt that English is a hybrid language. It is surprising that only 26% of the words in use today are derived from Germanic languages. Also, it is ironic that England's archaic rival was France in the annals of history but French has contributed nearly 29% of our modern English dictionary! Contrary to old adages which equate Greek and Latin, only 6% of English's words have their roots in Greek whereas Latin is the parent of a whopping 29% of the words. As time marches on, some rules bend. This is evident from the fact that 4% of English words have been derived from proper nouns. The remaining words have their roots from other languages, a clear by-product of imperialism. After this analysis, one need not wonder why there are so many exceptions in English!

Flowchart

The flowchart describes the process of publishing a book. The first step is to write the book. After that, the book is reread and , if necessary, rewritten so as to write from a different angle or to appeal to multiple audiences. The next step is to edit the book. This is to ensure the consistency of the plot. Another reason is to remove any grammatical and spelling mistakes. If the end result is not satisfactory, the book is again edited. Some books undergo nearly 20 editing and rewriting cycles. Subsequently, the final edition is proof - read. Mostly, there will not be many errors but many typing errors may have crept in which need to be removed. Next, the layout of the book and the design of the book is decided. This step is repeated until the effect is pleasing. Simultaneously, the ISBN and Copyright is obtained. After that, a CIP catalogue is filed. Then, the first copy of the book is printed and bound. Again, if required, this step is repeated. Meanwhile, steps to market this book is undertaken. Finally, the book is published, distributed and sold.

Paragraph writing

Conservation of water is the need of the hour today. This is because the ever - increasing population has put an immense pressure on our life - sustaining water resources. As citizens of the world , we can , in our small way , contribute towards water conservation. Firstly, we can implement rain - water harvesting in all our homes. Also, waste water can be recycled by utilising it for small tasks like gardening. Then, closing of taps and showers and then repairing dripping taps will go a long way in this endeavour. In agriculture, efficient irrigation systems like drip irrigation and overhead irrigation can make a difference in both the yield and the water conservation. After that, recharge pits can be dug, which can capture rainwater and stop runoff. This will recharge ground water supply. On a global scale, trees can be planted. This measure will prevent water runoff. Also, it will help rainwater penetrate the soil. Another efficient measure is to use desalination techniques such as distillation, electro - dialysis and reverse - osmosis for purification of water. On a similar note, sewage water can be treated in certified sewage treatment plants for drinking purposes. Lastly, storage of water can also be done in a scientific manner. Doing so will enhance the efficiency of utilisation of harvested water. Let us join hands and conserve water. After all, small drops make an ocean.

Letter to the Editor

21, MG Road,
Chennai 600010.
18 September 2009

The Editor,
PH road,
Chennai 600 026.

Dear Sir,

Sub: Complaint about the increasing air pollution in Chennai

I reside in the heart of this sprawling city. I would like to highlight the problems faced by people by the increasing amount of air pollution in the city. The level of impurities in the air has drastically increased in the past few years. This has been contributed by the industrialisation and the increased population in the city. The smoke being emitted from the factories and vehicles has been affecting the city's people in many ways.

The cutting of trees for construction of buildings and roads has affected the eco - system balance. So, the oxygen content in the air has come down and this in turn results in the spread of disease.

Hence, it is high time people take notice of this and start conservation. More public transport should be used. Growing of trees and usage of LPG and CNG must be advocated. Also, closure of factories that emit smoke beyond the allowed limit must be ordered. Rallies must be conducted to create awareness among he people on air pollution and its harmful effects. Therefore, I kindly request you to publish my letter in th distinguished columns of your newspaper so that people take notice of this problem and act accordingly.

Yours faithfully,
XYZ.
